Presentation to the ANC 3/4G & Broader Community, Feb. 1, 2022

Friends of the Field presented our positions and concerns to the Advisory Neighborhood Commission, ANC 3/4G on Feb 1, 2022.

As neighbors, our goal is to work with the community to produce a plan for the ECC field that meets the needs of ECC and Maret and recognizes the legitimate concerns of nearby residents.

Highlights from the presentation:

  • DC zoning regulations require that the concerns of the immediate neighbors be taken into consideration.
  • Maret's proposal for developing the field is too big, too intrusive, and too intensive in use for our residential neighborhood.
  • We're seeking postponement of the March 9 hearing at the Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) to conduct an inclusive process that satisfies the needs of all parties.
  • We reviewed our legal position as an affected party (Party Status), whose concerns merit "special consideration."
  • We presented an alternative view of how the site could be developed for a more limited, single field use.
  • And we detailed our concerns, including environment (stormwater runoff, artificial turf, loss of trees), pedestrian and bicycle safety in the wake of massively increased traffic, noise management and mitigation, and parking.

Site plan showing field wedged into residential neighborhood

This aerial view shows how the field, unlike other sports fields in the city, is wedged into a residential neighborhood, surrounded by homes, with no natural buffers or major roads to screen residents from activities.

Image shows how the field pushes close to the property lines in all directions

Any one of these sports uses would fit into the available space. All 3 crammed into one field would be too much, and push use too close to surrounding residents' homes.
